Adelaide came alive on September 13 with the launch of the inaugural Multicultural Soccer Festival, a celebration that has combined the passion of sport with the richness of cultural
diversity. Over three consecutive Saturdays, the festival has welcomed players, families, and community members to enjoy thrilling soccer matches alongside food, music, and traditions from around the world.
Organised by Community Access and Services South Australia (CAASSA) in partnership with the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) and the Ghan Club, the festival is the first of its kind in Adelaide. It was made possible through funding support from ADF, reflecting a shared vision of using sport to foster healthy, inclusive, and connected communities.
From its very first day, the festival has proven to be more than just a sporting competition. Soccer, the world’s game, has provided the perfect platform to bring together culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, many of whom see the sport as a universal language. On and off the field, participants and spectators alike have had the chance to build friendships, share stories, and celebrate the values of respect, teamwork, and unity.
Each match day has offered more than just soccer. Crowds have been treated to vibrant cultural performances, authentic international cuisines, and an atmosphere brimming with energy and colour. For many, it has been an opportunity to proudly showcase their cultural heritage while embracing the traditions of others—making the event a true reflection of Adelaide’s multicultural character.
The tournament itself saw strong competition in Groups A and B, leading to four outstanding teams advancing to the finals. On September 27, the festival reached its climax with a thrilling morning of matches and the much-anticipated Grand Final at 1:00 pm. The championship match delivered edge-of-your-seat excitement, with the winning team crowned champions of the inaugural festival and proudly lifting the trophy in front of cheering crowds.
Festival organisers are inviting the wider community to attend the finals, cheer on their favourite teams, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. “This is not just about soccer,” said organisers. “It’s about celebrating diversity, building connections, and creating a stronger, more inclusive community.”
The Multicultural Soccer Festival has already made history in its first year and is on its way to becoming a signature event for Adelaide—one that unites people of all backgrounds through the simple yet powerful joy of the game.
